Gambia formally gained its independence from Britain and became a member of the commonwealth of nations on the 18th of February 1965. Shortly thereafter the government proposed a convention from a monarchy to a republic with an elected president replacing the British monarch as chief of states.
The independence was primarily to achieve self-governance and control over its own affairs, allowing the Gambian people to make their own political decisions and manage their country without direct British rule. This if what we celebrate on the 18th of february, there is no school on this day.
